Fred Frames: Travelogue Scrapbook Frames
Fred Schneider, Contributing Writer
When a longtime customer asked me for an Australian-themed print for her daughter who had just returned from a school-sponsored tour of the country, I knew it was an opportunity to get creative. Knowing my customer was a scrapbook enthusiast, I suggested she make a page, or several, for the wall. Because it wouldn’t be designed for storage in a book, I suggested she incorporate a bit of “depth” onto the page by using a combination of mouldings. The end result: an unusual and beautiful keepsake of a journey abroad and a perfect gift.

Project 1: Tangalooma
Art Package Preparation:
Mount the scrapbook page on a piece of 12 5⁄8" x 12 5⁄8" Crescent Raven Black, Black Core mat (#6989), and cut to reveal the bevel all around. Next, mount a section of bamboo rug onto a 1⁄4" masonite board using fusion tissue, and cut to a 19 1⁄8" square. Mount the Tangalooma piece on the bamboo with a 3 1/4" reveal all around, keeping the bamboo “mat” texture horizontal.
Frame Preparation:
Cut and join a Framerica® Mocha Walnut™ frame, #BW202-060 to 19 1⁄8" x 19 1⁄8" (plus allowance). Extend the rabbet depth by adding a Framerica Black Satin frame #26273 (cut and joined with the face of the moulding against the fence). To create a perfectly smooth shadowbox lining, cut and join a Framerica® Black Satin frame #BW71273 (turned backwards) to fit exactly inside the Mocha frame.

Project 2: Sydney
Art Package Preparation:
For the “Sydney” framed piece, mount the scrapbook page on a piece of Crescent Arctic White Black Core matboard #63297, and cut to reveal the bevel all around. Mount that onto a piece of Crescent Black (corrugated) mat #MX-21 to 185⁄8" with ATG tape and glue, leaving a 3" reveal all around. Be sure to mount the piece with the matboard texture oriented horizontally.
Frame Preparation:
Cut and join a Framerica® Satin White frame #BW202-267 to 18 5⁄8" x 18 5⁄8" (plus allowance). Create the shadowbox lining in the same manner that was used for the Mocha frame, using Framerica® Black Satin #72273 for added depth.
Assembly For Both Projects

A combination of mouldings was used to create this frame, designed for slightly three-dimensional pieces
Cut clean glass into each frame, and then place a shadowbox lining frame into each. Attach the “reverse cut” lining frames to the front frames from behind. Place the art packages into the frames, back with Black Core mat #6989, attach with turnbuckles (in case they want to change the scrapbook page in the future), and finish with D-Rings for hanging. |
